BMP to PNG Converter
Drop a BMP, get a PNG. Nothing is uploaded.
The shape is always kept, so the other side follows. Neither maximum ever ENLARGES a picture that is already smaller than it.
Pixels for either maximum, and a percentage for the last one. It is ignored while Resize is keeping the original size.
Nothing is uploaded. Your file is read in your browser and never leaves your computer.
What this does
Microsoft Paint, a scanner’s bundled software and a great deal of older Windows software still save BMP. A PNG keeps every pixel exactly and keeps its transparent parts transparent, which is what a logo, a label or a screenshot needs. It turns up out of Paint, out of a scanner, or out of software written in the nineties, and it is always far larger than it needs to be.

Questions
Is BMP to PNG Converter free?
Yes. Every tool on Short Work Tools is free, with no account, no sign-in and no limit on how many files you run through it. It runs on your own computer, so it costs us nothing to give away.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Nothing is uploaded. Your file is read in your browser and never leaves your computer. There is no upload step, no server copy and nothing kept afterwards, which is also why it works with the network switched off once the page has loaded.
What does the PNG keep from the BMP?
Exact pixels with no quality loss, and real transparency. Not one pixel changes; a PNG keeps everything the bitmap had. The file usually collapses to a fraction of its old size, which is the entire reason to do this.
How large a file can I use?
Up to 250 MB. The limit is your browser's memory rather than an upload size, because the file never goes anywhere; a file larger than that is refused with a message rather than crashing the tab.
Which programs write BMP files?
Microsoft Paint, a scanner’s bundled software and a great deal of older Windows software still save BMP. It turns up out of Paint, out of a scanner, or out of software written in the nineties, and it is always far larger than it needs to be.
Does the converted picture keep the information the camera wrote into it?
No, and there is no setting for it because there is nothing to set. The picture is decoded to pixels and drawn onto a fresh canvas, and a canvas has no place to put the camera model, the date or the GPS position the original carried, so none of it is in the file you get back.
