JPG to BMP Converter

Drop a JPG, get a BMP. Nothing is uploaded.

Background

Neither a JPG nor a 24-bit BMP can be transparent, so whatever was see-through becomes this colour.

Resize

The shape is always kept, so the other side follows. Neither maximum ever ENLARGES a picture that is already smaller than it.

Pixels for either maximum, and a percentage for the last one. It is ignored while Resize is keeping the original size.

Nothing is uploaded. Your file is read in your browser and never leaves your computer.

What this does

Every camera and every phone writes JPG. A BMP is the plainest picture there is, so a stubborn old program that refuses every modern format will usually still open one. It is what a photograph of a print arrives as, and what a listing wants back.

How it works

  1. Choose your JPG fileDrag a JPG file onto the box above, or press it and pick one. It is read in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
  2. Wait for the BMPThe conversion runs on your own computer, so how long it takes depends on your machine and the size of the file, not on a queue.
  3. Download the BMPPress the download button. The BMP file lands in your downloads folder, ready for your slicer.

About the formats

Why your file is a JPG
JPEG. Every camera and every phone writes JPG.
Why you want a BMP
Windows Bitmap. A BMP is the plainest picture there is, so a stubborn old program that refuses every modern format will usually still open one.
What a BMP holds
Every pixel exactly as it was, written out raw with no compression whatsoever, which is why one of these is enormous.
What changes on the way to BMP
Nothing further is thrown away; a JPG has already given up what it is going to give up. What changes is bulk — ten or twenty times the bytes for the very same view.
Where this format turns up
It is what a photograph of a print arrives as, and what a listing wants back.

Questions

Is JPG to BMP Converter free?

Yes. Every tool on Short Work Tools is free, with no account, no sign-in and no limit on how many files you run through it. It runs on your own computer, so it costs us nothing to give away.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Nothing is uploaded. Your file is read in your browser and never leaves your computer. There is no upload step, no server copy and nothing kept afterwards, which is also why it works with the network switched off once the page has loaded.

What does the BMP keep from the JPG?

Every pixel exactly as it was, written out raw with no compression whatsoever, which is why one of these is enormous. Nothing further is thrown away; a JPG has already given up what it is going to give up. What changes is bulk — ten or twenty times the bytes for the very same view.

How large a file can I use?

Up to 250 MB. The limit is your browser's memory rather than an upload size, because the file never goes anywhere; a file larger than that is refused with a message rather than crashing the tab.

Which programs write JPG files?

Every camera and every phone writes JPG. It is what a photograph of a print arrives as, and what a listing wants back.

Does the converted picture keep the information the camera wrote into it?

No, and there is no setting for it because there is nothing to set. The picture is decoded to pixels and drawn onto a fresh canvas, and a canvas has no place to put the camera model, the date or the GPS position the original carried, so none of it is in the file you get back.
